These were the lessons I learned from the Brazilian candy seller studies and other studies of everyday learning that I have attempted to adapt in another domain in Cultural Modeling. A Case of Literary Reasoning Literary reasoning is the target domain in which my work in Cultural Modeling began. I recognized early on that literary response required a playful attitude toward linguistic detail and an ability to deconstruct figurative language. In the next chapter on modeling, I will explicate a more detailed map of problem solving in the domain of literary reasoning.
The genre remained stable, but the lexicon for describing it changed. The circumstances under which it could be practiced changed. By 1990, there were radio programs in which people publicly signified on each other, a practice unheard of during my youth or that of my mother. Also, routine metaphors employed and played upon changed. Thus the practice had both a stable and an emergent quality. Other researchers have done similar analyses of stability and emergence in other African-descent cultural practices such as music, dance, food, and spirituality (Asante & Welsh-Asante, 1990; DuBois, 1968; Herskovitz, 1958).
Thus, taking practice as the unit of analysis, I argue that a lot of Black people engage in the reasoning associated with signifying, but not that using language in this way is somehow an outgrowth of dark skin. It is also useful to note that forms of ritual insult and language play generally can be found among many speech communities (see Deborah 22 Culture, Literacy, and Learning Tannen’s [1979, 1989] work on dinnertime conversations among Italian American, Greek American, and Jewish American families or Alan Dundes’  work on ritual verbal dueling among Turkish youth as examples).
