Taft’s bust, based on the death mask, was reproduced both in bronze and in marble. 35 It was important that Taft’s first official commission in Chicago should be a success, and it was. To a modern eye the detailed treatment of contemporary costume may seem excessive, but nineteenth-century viewers would have considered this a necessary aspect. As a matter of fact, the modeling throughout is more sensitive than is the case with many comparable works. It should be noted that in none of Taft’s portrait busts, even the earliest ones, did he resort to the undraped shoulders and chest, which were one of the last survivors of the earlier neoclassical style in portraiture.
