Given the recent focus on debates in political science and political sociology on the challenges to representative democracy, and the search for new institutions and procedures that can help to channel increased participation, the research we present offers empirical insights on alternative conceptions of democracy and the actors that support them. Additionally, with the attention paid to the transnational dimension of democracy and the emerging conception of ‘another Europe’, the volume addresses a relevant and little analysed aspect of Europeanization: the Europeanization of social movements.
