To determine if sampling procedures were sufficient, both the appropriateness and adequateness of the sample were assessed (Morse, 1997). Appropriateness refers to the degree to which the choice of informants and method "fit" the purpose of the study as determined by the research questions and stage of the research. The fit of any participant was determined by characteristics of her being female; self-reporting that she considers herself to have a relationship with her daughter, mother, and/or grandmother, interacting with the other family participants a minimum of one time per week; and her willingness to share her constructions about these relationships.

Staying conscious of my subjective connection with the research process also helped me to approach my work with these women "not as a person who knows everything, but as a person who has come to learn; not as a person who wants to be like them, but as a person who wants to know what it is to be like them" (Bogdan & Biklen, 1992, p. 79). Trustworthiness Inevitably, considerations of qualitative research inspire discussions of scientific validity and reliability. Scholars often see particular strengths of qualitative research, such as reliance on the human instrument and the flexibility of research design, as weaknesses (Merrick, 1999).
