Atlas commuted to the highly respected Boys High School in Brooklyn. For several months before college, he worked in the main New York Public Library for $11 a week in the map room and later with their collection on patents. Later in life, his inventive mind would produce more than 20 patents for his own inventions. He began classes at the City College of New York (CCNY) in September 1941 with the hopes of specializing in electrical engineering, but with David Atlas. Atlas continues his research on the physics and dynamics of convective storms.

He died on May 13, 1907. ᨳ Buys Ballot, Christoph Hendrik Diederik (Christophorus Henricus Didericus) (1817–1890) Dutch Meteorologist Christoph Hendrik Diederik Buys Ballot was a Dutch meteorologist, born in Kloetinge, the Netherlands, on October 10, 1817. He both studied and taught mineralogy, geology, and mathematics at the University of Utrecht. In 1854 he founded the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute and was its first director. This institute was a result of an outgrowth of a small magnetic observatory lab that he created in 31 a cellar at Sonnenbergh.

By trying to establish rules for weather forecasting, Buys Bal- lot may have been the first to connect points of equal pressure on a weather map (isobars), showing zones of low pressure (depressions) and high pressure areas (anticyclones). He also invented an aeroklinoscope, an instrument that was on shore for sailors to see and use to signal the magnitude and direction of the baric gradient. These gradients cause the acceleration of local intense winds, and sailors could use his Buys Ballot law for staying clear of inclement weather.
