Fear Another criterion for stalking is the experience of fear by the victim of stalking (Cupach & Spitzberg, 2004; Spitzberg, 2002a; Tjaden & Thoennes, 1998). In other words, the behavior of the stalker must be threatening enough to instill fear of harm toward the victim or someone close to the victim. Fear is psychological distress caused by the actual presence or perception of danger. Therefore, before examining women’s experiences of fear, we describe typical stalking tactics that elicit fear in victims.

And people knew that I was on drugs [so they would believe that I overdosed rather than the truth, that he killed me]. That was my greatest fear. [I was] scared because the way people acted. I mean people, neighbors, family . . they believed that I had a drug problem, but they just saw my problem, they didn’t see his. qxd 4/10/06 2:41 PM Page 23 Women’s Perceptions of Partner Stalking 23 Sherry gave her partner’s threats greater weight because both she and her partner realized that other people would discount her death by overdose as self-induced, and would not investigate it as a homicide.

Yet, intimate partners already have visual and physical proximity to one another. When a woman attempts to describe to others how her partner is stalking her, her accounts of his attempts to maintain visual and physical proximity in ways that are frightening may be dismissed by outsiders because they expect partners to be in close proximity. So the question becomes, Is there a way to differentiate normal visual or physical proximity from abnormal visual or physical proximity within intact relationships?
